Planet Terror

Grindhouse - April 6, 2007

Quentin Taratino & Robert Rodriguez take us back to the era of the "grindhouse".

A grindhouse is an American term for a theater that mainly showed exploitation films, or is an often misused term to describe the genre of films that played in such theatres (which are actually "exploitation films"). Grind-houses were known for non-stop, triple-bill programs of B movies, usually consisting of a double feature where two films were shown back to back. Many of these inner-city theatres formerly featured burlesque shows which featured "bump and grind" dancing, leading to the term "grind-house." Beginning in the late 1960s and especially during the 1970s, the subject matter of exploitation films shown in these theaters often included explicit sex, violence, bizarre or perverse plot points, and other taboo content. Many grind-houses were exclusively pornographic.

By the 1980s, home video threatened to render the grind-house obsolete. By the end of the decade, these theaters had vanished from Los Angeles's Broadway and Hollywood Boulevard, New York City's Times Square and San Francisco's Market Street. By the mid-1990s, these particular theaters had completely disappeared from the United States.

I never got the chance to experience this first hand but from what I've researched it seems like this movie is gonna be a wild ride.
I found a DVD on Amazon.com called 42nd Street Forever Vol 1 that has 40+ of these old grindhouse trailers that should be fun to watch and help me understand where Rodriguez & Taratino are getting their inspiration for this amazing movie.

Nash Makes Bid to be NHL All Star Game MVP; West Wins 12-9

2-2-4 by the Columbus Blue Jackets forward was one of the top performances on the night

Columbus Blue Jackets left wing Rick Nash said he was surprised to be an All-Star and that he was going to go to the game, to represent the team and "have fun with it."

Nash did more than have fun with it, he nearly took home the MVP Award, which went to Buffalo's Daniel Briere.

"It was more fun this time, going back, knowing some of the guys and knowing what the game was all about," Nash said. "It's not serious at all, it's for the guys to have fun and for the fans to be entertained."

On a night where the focus was on the fire power of the Eastern Conference team, Sidney Crosby's first All-Star game and Joe Sakic, Nash went out and scored two goals, two assists, a game-high six shots on goal en route to a big-time performance.

In the first period, Nash was orignially credited with a goal on a deflection in front of Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller. At the beginning of the second period the goal was changed and given to Los Angeles defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky. Nash was credited with an assist on the play, and that was the only thing which would not go Nash's way Wednesday night.

In the second period, in a stretch of 54 seconds, the line of Colorado's Joe Sakic, Chicago's Martin Havlat and Nash tallied twice. The first goal was No. 61's first National League Hockey All-Star goal. He used his speed, power and strength to fend of Buffalo defenseman Brian Campbell, drove to net and sliding it around the outstretched right pad of New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur.

"It was fun getting to play with Sakic and Havlat," Nash said. "I'm pretty spoiled here, getting to play with David Vyborny and Sergei Fedorov, but getting another chance to say I played with Joe Sakic was pretty cool."

Not much later, Nash assisted on a Havlat goal, the third score of the night for possibly the most dangerous line of the entire night. They weren't done yet.

In the third period, Nash took a pass from Sakic and burried a shot past Montreal goaltender Cristobal Huet at the 7:12 mark. His work wasn't done yet, as he, Western Conference teammate Minnesota's Brian Roloston and Boston's Zdeno Chara were all going for hat tricks in the final nine minutes of the game.

"The first goal, I just got a pass from Sakic, took it in and scored," Nash said. "The second one was another great pass by Sakic and I just put it upstairs."

On NHL.com Nash, who was +3 for the night, was voted the No. 2 star, with Briere voted the No. 1 star and Roloston the No. 3 star. Anyway you look at it, Rick Nash had a great night, represented the Blue Jackets, and maybe gave a little preview of what's to come in the second half of the season.

So, what did head coach Ken Hitchcock think of Nashes performance ?

"Most importantly, did he have a good time?" Hitchcock said. "He said he really enjoyed it and that's what you want players to leave with - a positive experience with each other."

For the game, the Western Conference won 12-9, with Nash getting credit for the game-winning goal. The game was 3-3 after one period with starters Miller and Vancouver's Roberto Luongo giving up three goals each.

The second period was highlighted by six Western Confernce goals, to take a 9-6 lead into the final period. The Eastern Confernce scored three times, but could not slow down the Western Confernce, who added an empty net goal by Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

Apple announces iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Apple Computer (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs confirmed months of speculation Tuesday by unveiling a new mobile phone that plays and downloads music and a set-top box that allows people to stream video from their computers to their televisions.

Steve Jobs introduced AppleTV at the MacWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco today.

Jobs said Apple's iPhone would "reinvent" the telecommunications sector and "leapfrog" past the current generation of hard-to-use smart phones.

"Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything," he said during his keynote address at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo. "It's very fortunate if you can work on just one of these in your career. ... Apple's been very fortunate in that it's introduced a few of these."

Jobs demonstrated the phone's music capabilities by playing "Lovely Rita, Meter Maid, " from the Beatles' Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

iPhone uses a patented technology Apple is calling "multi-touch," and is essentially a computer with a blank screen that users configure with easy-to-use software so they can touch the monitor with their fingers.

"We're going to use a pointing device that we're all born with," Jobs said. "It works like magic. ... It's far more accurate than any touch display ever shipped. It ignores unintended touches. It's super smart."

The phone automatically synchs your media -- movies, movies, photos -- through Apple's iTunes digital content store. The device also synchs e-mail content, Web bookmarks and nearly any type of digital content stored on your computer.

"It's just like an iPod," Jobs said, "charge and synch."

iPhone is 11.6 millimeters thin, thinner than almost any phone on the market today. It comes with a 2-megapixel digital camera built into the back, as well as a slot for headphones and a SIM card.

Apple will begin taking order Tuesday for $299 video box, called Apple TV, and the devices will be available in February.

The gadget is designed to bridge computers and television sets so users can more easily watch their downloaded movies on a big screen. A prototype of the gadget was introduced by Jobs in September when Apple announced it would sell TV shows and movies through its iTunes online store.

The product could be as revolutionary to digital movies as Apple's iPod music player was to digital music. Both devices liberate media from the computer, allowing people to enjoy digital files without being chained to a desktop or laptop.

"It's really, really easy to use," Jobs told the crowd at San Francisco's Moscone Center before demonstrating the system with a video clip of "The Good Shepherd." "It's got the processing horsepower to do the kinds of things we like to do."

AppleTV will come with a 40-gigabyte hard drive that stores up to 50 hours of video. It features an Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) processor and can handle videos, photos and music streamed from up to five computers within the wireless range.

Jobs also said Apple has sold more than 2 billion songs on its popular iTunes music download site, catapulting the company into the top ranks of music sellers worldwide. Apple, which sells 58 songs per second, or 5 million songs a day, sells more songs than Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and ranks behind only WalMart, Best Buy and Target as a music retailer.

"We couldn't be happier with the growth rate of iTunes," Jobs said.

He said Apple will sell digital movies from Paramount. Apple has partnered with Disney for several months, offering about 100 movies on iTunes. With Paramount's selection, it will have 250 movies available for downloading on the site.

It remains to be seen whether the king of digital music can colonize an entirely new category of gadgets. Apple could use a megahit along the lines of its iconic iPod to divert investors' attention from the stock options-backdating scandal that has tainted its reputation.

The backdating of stock options, which has been widespread among Silicon Valley companies, involves pegging stock options to favorable grant dates in the past to boost the recipients' award. It isn't necessarily illegal, but securities laws require companies to properly disclose the practice in their accounting and settle any charges that may result.

In a December filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple said Jobs was aware of, or recommended the selection of, some favorable grant dates but he neither benefited financially from them nor "appreciated the accounting implications."

Apple shares were up 95 cents, or 1.11 percent, to $86.42 in midday trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $50.16 to $93.16.

Air Gear Vol 2

Air Gear Vol 2 got released today.
Its gotta be some of my favorite manga artwork ever.
Oh! Great just draws some amazing action scenes and s0me great ladies.
The cover was censored a lil by giving Simca pants instead of the chaps & panties of the original.
The Air Gear anime just finished up a few weeks ago and I thought it was a fairly good translation of the anime up until the ending.
It was licensed for release in the US last week by ADV.
I think I just might buy it when it comes out.

Thrashers put an end to Sabres' bid for NHL record start

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Kari Lehtonen and the upstart Atlanta Thrashers put an end to the Buffalo Sabres' bid for an NHL record start.

Barely.

Lehtonen denied all three Sabres shootout attempts and stopped 32 shots overall in a 5-4 win Saturday night, ending Buffalo's season-opening winning streak at 10. The Sabres will settle for sharing the league record for best start to a season set by Toronto in 1993.

Former Sabres player Vyachelsav Kozlov scored the only shootout goal the Thrashers needed, beating Ryan Miller with a snap shot inside the left post.

The loss -- the Sabres' first in the regular season since a 4-2 defeat to Philadelphia on April 7 -- also ended their 15-game winning streak over two seasons, two short of the NHL record set by Pittsburgh in 1993.

It wasn't for a lack of trying. Buffalo rallied four times from one-goal deficits, with Jochen Hecht tying the game with 1:44 left in regulation.

The Sabres got a standing ovation immediately following the game, and the team responded by skating to center ice to acknowledge the supporters.

That didn't mean the Sabres players weren't disappointed.

"I haven't felt like this in a while," Miller said. "It would have been fun to be on our own, a little piece of history. ... Every night's not going to go your way."

Buffalo's comeback certainly wasn't a surprise, except that it fell short. The Sabres had already won five games in which they trailed this season, including three times rallying back from two-goal deficits.

Atlanta's Bobby Holik and Scott Mellanby had a goal and assist each, while Ilya Kovalchuk and Niko Kapanen also scored in a game in which the Thrashers never trailed.

Jason Pominville led Buffalo with a goal and two assists, followed by Daniel Briere who had a goal and assist. Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres in a game between the Eastern Conference's two best teams.

Clearly, these aren't the familiar pushover Thrashers of old. Improving to 8-1-3, they're off to the best start in franchise history and their 19 points are one behind Buffalo. By comparison, Atlanta didn't register its eight win last season until its 19th game.

"We're not here to make statements. We're here to win hockey games," Holik said. "We won tonight playing a good game. We matched their game. ... And we're just moving on."

Thrashers coach Bob Hartley was certainly pleased.

"We're resilient," Hartley said. "Like tonight when they scored with a minute-and-a-half left, that was playoff atmosphere out there. ... They had the momentum on their side and we managed to keep our composure."

Lehtonen was the difference, the second-year starter was particularly sharp in overtime, when he got his left pad out to prevent Derek Roy's shot from in close from dribbling in with 71 seconds left.

The game had a playoff-type atmosphere, featuring a raucous capacity crowd anticipating a record. One fan even brought a sign that read: "82-0: Why not?"

The electric mood was doused when the Thrashers opened a 2-1 lead on Mellanby's goal 10 minutes in. But the crowd was certainly into it after Hecht tied the game, spending the final 2 minutes of regulation on its feet.

The Thrashers were particularly effective in blocking Buffalo shots with defenseman Greg de Vries credited with 10 of Atlanta's 27.

Atlanta was particularly resilient, responding each time the Sabres scored.

Mellanby made it 2-1 a mere 44 seconds after Briere tied the game in the first period. Kapanen then made it 3-2, backhanding in a carom off the end board into the open side, less than two minutes after Vanek scored with 6 minutes left in the second period.

The Sabres were sloppy in opening the game, a habit they've been unable to shake this season, having allowed 10 first-period goals, the most of any period.

Jim Slater set up Holik's game-opening goal when he shed Dmitri Kalinin's check and fed his teammate wide open in the slot. Mellanby's goal came on the transition after Buffalo's Maxim Afinogenov, with a weak drop pass, turned the puck over at the Atlanta blue line.

I've been watching fansubs of this series for months and I can honestly tell you its a very good show.
Its based in the same universe as the movie Blood: The Last Vampire.
I haven't seen the movie but I know that this series has better graphics and obviously a much longer time frame to tell its story.
The story centers around a girl named Saya and her family and friends while they battle the Chiropterans aka vampires that are threatening the world.
The story takes us around the world and introduces us to many very interesting characters even Saya's long lost sister who shares some of Saya's "special" characteristics but not her compassion for life.

Buffalo Sabres are undefeated after 9 games

The Buffalo Sabres have won their first nine games this season & are just one game from tying the league record for wins to start a season at 10.
They play at the New York Islanders Thursday Oct 26 to tie the record and then they come home to play the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday Oct 28 to break the record.
Those should be some great games.
The Sabres lost in the Eastern Conference Championship series last year and are a front runner to win the Stanley Cup this year.

Hellboy gets animated

Actors Ron Perlman & Selma Blair reprise their roles of Hellboy & Liz Sherman respectively.
The DVD should be available within the next few months.

This is another series by the author of BLAME!
Its seems to be set in the past of that same universe.
Instead of running around in a megastructure this story follows a main character who gets around on a motorcycle.
I think I might actually like this better than BLAME but its not licensed for release in th USA yet.
If you interested in seing it you can find it at OMANGA and Evil Genius
Hopefully it will get licensed soon.
I'd really love to be able to hold physical volumes of this series in my hands.

MPD Psycho finally gets released in a DVD boxset

I've been considering buying the MPD Psycho series for a while because it based on one of my Top 5 favorite manga series.
Its finally being released in a boxset for the price of about one DVD on October 10, 2006.
Its directed by Takashi Miike who is the critically acclaimed director Audition & Ichi The Killer
Neither of which I've seen yet.
Most recently he did an episode of Masters of Horror called Imprint, which I havent seen yet either but plan to buy on DVD soon, & the final segment on Three Extremes which I found to be quite disturbing
I really should rent some of his feature films because who knows he might end up becoming another of my favorit directors alongside Quentin Tarantino.
As I posted earlier the manga that this series is based on is being released in 2007.
I'm gonna order this boxset ASAP.
I cant wait to watch it.

The 2006-2007 NHL season started tonite

The season started with two great overtime games on VERSUS (formerly OLN).
In the first game the Buffalo Sabres (I'm really liking their new logo as seen above) went the distance and more with the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes tied at 2-2 after regulation and eventually winning in a shoot-out

Personally my favorite part of the game.
1-on-1...the shooter v the goalie.

The shoot-out's actually what got me interested in hockey.
There was a shoot-out in the 1994 olympics and I've been a hockey fan ever since

In the second game the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in OT.

I'm doing fantasy hockey for the first time this year which should be pretty exciting.

In the space of two years Matt Gresham has gone from being known as simply ‘Nu:Tones’s younger brother’, to Hospital Records’ most valued asset. We catch up behind the scenes at his album photo shoot and find out why now, more than ever, Logistics is ready to turn drum & bass on its head.

With their debut album ‘Northern Soul’ finally ready for release on 9th October, late August was perhaps not the ideal time to try and pin Craggz and Parrallel Forces down for an interview. Finally, after a week long AIM, mobile and email assault, Knowledge managed to entice them down to Carnaby Street for a cheeky pint one Friday afternoon.

DJ Friction lines up double-drops like lambs to the slaughter – he’s done it from day one and, as you’re about to find out, plans to do so for the forseeable future.

With a string of releases and remixes across established labels including No U-Turn, Prototype, and Renegade Hardware amongst others, Fierce AKA Daniel Burke, decided to unleash his own Quarantine Recordings on the scene in 2001

MPD Psycho gets licensed by Dark Horse

At Anime Weekend Atlanta the weekend of Sept 22-24, Dark Horse officially announced that they have acquired the license to MPD-Psycho.

Dark Horse is aiming for a late-second quarter, probably June, release date for the first volume.

Mike Gombos, Director of Asian Licensing at Dark Horse, called MPD-Psycho "the gorriest manga you'll ever read," but ads, "the importance of this piece far transcends its shock value, as the art is cleaner than most series I have seen (available in English), and the mystery in the story is riveting."

MPD-Psycho has been adapted into a 6-episode live-action mini-series, directed by Takashi Miike, which has been released in North America by Adness.

MPD Psycho is written by Eiji Ohtsuka and illustrated by Shou Tajima. 11 volumes have been released to date in Japan.

Knowledge speaks to rising stars Raf & Ill Logic as they prepare to record their debut album and finds out what makes them tick.

Making the breaktrough into the world of the MC is a hard nut to crack – but SP:MC has managed to establish himself as one of the most innovative on the circuit in the last five years. He tells Knowledge his plans for the future and why he is determined to progress his career.

Ergo Proxy - Coming to DVD in the US in Nov 2006

Ergo Proxy is just about my favorite anime series of the spring/summer 2006 season.
The whole series has been televised in japan & 18 episodes have been fan-subbed at the time that I'm writing this.
I've seen all 18 of those and have been amazed.
The series is set in a future in a domed city called Romdeau where everyone has the their own robots called Auto-Raves.
It follows a young policewoman called Real Mayer & a government worker Vincent Law as well as a few other main chracters.
In the first few episodes you find out about a monster called a Proxy that has escaped from a research facility.
Real is sent to find it, later that day it terrorizes her in her home whiles she's in her underwear.
I'm not gonna give too much away but if you like sci-fi like Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex then you'll definitely like this.
Its also produced by the same animation studio that did Samurai Champloo so it looks amazing.

If you're not interested in fan-sub then dont worry because the series has been licensed and volume one will be available in the USA in November 2006.

Planetes is one of my top 5 manga.
Its short (5 volumes) and sweet.
Its what I've learned is HARD sci-fi.
That means its a more realistic style of science fiction and I think it does a pretty good job of showing how life would be in the near future.
There is one scene with a tall girl who was born on the moon that has a lil science behind it that is pretty interesting and makes a lil sense as well.

All 5 volumes are available for purchase as well as on Stop Tazmo.

REMEMBER...
If you like a manga you read in scanlation do as much as you can to support the USA release.
Sometimes all I can do is buy the first volume.
Even a lil can make a difference.

This manga is done by my absolute fave artist.
Tsutomu Nihei.
His artwork is not your average big eyes, spiky hair and big boobs that you might find in other manga.
His is a former architect so his backgrounds are just amazing.
He has done a few other books that havent been licensed for release in the USA yet.
My fave of his books is Biomega (I will post about that at another time).
He has also done NOISE!, Abara & Digimortal.

Volumes 1-5 of BLAME! are available at all major bookstores or online.
Volume 6 will be released in early November 2006

I've gotten into reading a lot of manga lately.
ATM Air Gear is one of my faves.
Its got some great artwork and a pretty good storyline as well.

Here's the description from the back of the book.

I got an endoscopy today.
It was just take make sure that the persistant heartburn that I have isnt anything worse.
Things turned out well.
The doc said he might need to give me some meds to digest my food faster.
He said he saw food in my stomach even though I hadnt eaten since before 9pm last night.
